Types of Tenants and reasons for Renting
People choose renting for various different reasons. Renting is cheaper than owning a house, some people move around a lot so the best option for them is renting. In some areas house prices can be quite high such as London so renting is a cheaper option, also students whilst away at university rent during term time. Working professionals want to live in flats and not have the responsibility of a house so choose to rent instead as it gives opportunity to meet new people. |
- Due to the increasing property prices a lot of people are finding it difficult to get onto the property ladder. This group includes young people and those who are unemployed or are in low paid work. Many people save whilst staying at home with there parents while others may not have this choice and are left with the option of renting.
- Renting is also popular with young people who want their independence but are not ready to settle down and start a mortgage.
- Many large businesses and firms rent out properties to clients and employees from abroad or from another country. These tenants often pay a large amount of rent; however they will usually be paying for upmarket properties.
- Sharing rented properties is becoming more and more popular with both young and old.
- A lot of people choose to share with friends, relatives or even people they have never met, for the social aspects and/or the company.
- Students are another large group who share rented property. Full time studying restricts most students to work part time which would usually not generate enough money to rent a property alone.
- For young people just starting work, renting property is ideal if they are not sure where their next career move will take them. Older professionals who often work away from home may choose to rent or share a property to save on costs, as they may already have a house with a mortgage.
- Many couples choose to temporary rent a property together before buying a place of there own. This may be simply so that they can save or to wait until they are serious.
- Couples who have recently separated or divorced may choose to rent before deciding where to they want to settle again. Especially if they have had a mortgage with their previous partner, as the thought of going through the mortgage process again may be too much so soon.
- Many people rely heavily on benefits to survive and struggle to be accepted for a mortgage. This leads people to rent homes from their local council as the cost of renting private accommodation would be too high.
